A prenatal ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves, inaudible to the human ear, that are transmitted through the abdomen via a device called a transducer to look at the inside of the abdomen. With prenatal ultrasound, the echoes are recorded and transformed into video or photographic images of your baby.
The ultrasound can be used to show images of the baby, amniotic sac, placenta, and ovaries. Major anatomical abnormalities or birth defects are visible on an ultrasound. Most prenatal ultrasound procedures are performed topically, or on the surface of the skin, using a gel as a conductive medium to aid in the image quality.
Ultrasounds have been studied extensively for over 35 years and have been shown to cause no harm to either mother or baby. 3D/4D ultrasound utilizes the same type of ultrasound waves as a regular 2D scan performed in your doctor’s office.
That depends on what you’re looking to see. Many mothers like coming in twice, early on, 15-26 weeks, when they can see the baby as a whole, and then again at 25-34 weeks to see a more detailed face. Between 28 and 32 weeks, your baby develops more fat and gets a more defined face. After 34 weeks, it becomes a little more difficult to obtain good pictures since the baby is running out of room. However all babies are different and it is possible for great images to be obtained all the way up to 39 weeks.
3D ultrasounds create three-dimensional still images of your baby in color providing more detailed facial features. 4D ultrasounds use sound waves to reproduce moving images of your baby in your womb.
At 15 weeks we can determine the gender with a very high accuracy. If you are over 16 weeks and the gender cannot be seen, we have a no cost return policy and invite you back for a weekday return within the next 14 days and we will rescan you for free. The need for a return visit is usually due to the baby’s position.
Most doctors recommend maintaining a healthy fluid intake, especially while you are pregnant. This will help to ensure your amniotic fluid is clear as well as full. There are many things out of the sonographer’s control like the baby’s position, the mother’s skin type and build, amount of amniotic fluid, etc.
Depending on the ultrasound package that you select, your session will last between 10 and 25 minutes. However, plan on spending 30 – 60 minutes with us so that we can send you home with memories to last a lifetime. It is best to arrive a few minutes early to fill out our paperwork.
It is important to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water 7 days before your appointment to ensure your amniotic fluid is clear. About 30 minutes before your appointment, we recommend drinking fruit juice so that your baby will be awake during your session (unless you are told not to by your physician).
